Tyson Fury co-promoter Bob Arum has said Fury’s lastest fight will take place in late February or early March, according to a Manchester Evening News report. The only question will be who Fury will face.
And this question has been made more complicated by recent events. Tyson Fury wanted a unification fight with Oleksandr Usyk, but Anthony Joshua has to exercise his rematch clause to force a fight against Usyk next spring.
It will analyzed that Fury’s next opponent could be Dillian Whyte, the interim WBC champion, in a mandatory title fight. However, Whyte is in a legal battle with the WBC over the governing body’s refusal to field him in a title fight.
While the lawsuit prevents the WBC from naming Whyte as a mandatory challenger, that doesn’t mean a fight between him and Fury won’t take place.
Arum told BoxingScene that he and co-promoter Frank Warren are discussing with Whyte’s side a possible fight in March at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
“Frank and I are looking for the best possible opponent,” Arum told BoxingScene.
“Obviously number one, we would like Usyk to step down. Number two, if that’s not possible, then Whyte is probably as attractive an opponent to Tyson as anyone else. Again, let’s sit down with [Whyte’s] and see if we can come to an agreement. “
Speaking to IFL TV, Arum said a fight with Whyte shouldn’t be mandatory and that it would be a good fight for Fury, and said if the two had appeared, Tyson Fury “should” in the UK be beat on British soil. He also said Joe Joyce would be an option if Whyte or Usyk were not available to fight.
Arum said if a fight occurs between Fury and Whyte, the sack split would have to be 80/20 in favor of Fury based on the previous sacks between the two boxers. Whyte promoter Eddie Hearn called the split “scandalous.”
Fury is coming off back-to-back wins over Deontay Wilder, first by TKO in seven rounds in February 2020, then more recently by KO on October 9, 2021. The first of the two sent the WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles to Fury .
